David Parkinson about "Tiger Danny"

David Parkinson (Empire) attended the screenings of Romanian Cinema Week "ALL CHANGE!" (London, 1st-4th May, 2009). This is what he wrote about "Tiger Danny":

[...]And the pain of maternal separation recurs in Radu Potcoava's Tiger Danny, as Victoria Cocias tries to persuade Ionut Adascalitei to take her homemade steak and fries with him on the plane to America. Girlfriend Valentina Popa is much more concerned with her list of fashion requests, while younger brother Alin Rosca fusses about sports stuff and gadgets and building manager Marcel Horobet even hints about some fishing tackle, as Adascalitei sets off for the airport. However, he hasn't left himself enough time to negotiate the Bucharest traffic and Popa's need for the loo and the unreliability of buddy Dorian Boguta's car mean that he only just reaches the check-in on time. Or does he...?
Riffing on the same consumerist avidity that currently informs so many Romanian pictures, this is also a study in deception (as Popa can barely wait for her boyfriend to catch his plane before she's making plans to cheat on him) and a lament for the decline in traditional communal manners, with Cocias's charity towards a recently widowed neighbour contrasting with Boguta hitting on Popa as soon as Adascalitei is out of sight. The staccato pacing, as each fresh mishap hinders Adascalitei's journey, rather suggests the country's stumbling progress away from its totalitarian past. But the real satirical punch comes in the last shot.
